Well, any subsurface liquids could be insulated and warmed up geothermically. Just look at the lake they found in Antarctica recently. Still fish down there under the ice cap approximately 80 million years after the continent froze over, and most importantly liquid water. Water can't be liquid if it's too cold. If there is actually liquid water on Titan, it is not too cold by definition.

@ But that's different. No matter how cold it is, the Arctic is still surrounded by and enveloped in a fully developed biosphere with endless opportunities to adapt to the cold, or any other extreme biome on earth. That doesn't mean life could originate and take hold in such cold if cold was all there was.

@ Maybe, but it would be very slowly developing life. We would probably not even recognize it as life it we found it because of its slow metabolism.

@ Sure, when it has time to take hold and develop. The problem with deep cold like this is that is slows everything down. What takes a million years on earth takes a billion there. It's just how physics work, and is barely even debatable. There's no way anything could live in -180C and NOT slow down every process involved to a crawl. At -273.15C everything just stops and no process can move forward at all. I think we're the ones who should accuse you of magical, video game thinking. Relativism. And it's not the serious way to approach anything. And also, earth life is tenacious because it has had billions of years to adjust to harsh conditions. And those harsh conditions have all that time been surrounded by a not-harsh biosphere where life has been able to live relatively hassle-free. So endless chances for it to adapt to the more difficult things. On Titan the entire place is a lot colder than Antarctica at all times. It's just not comparable at all.

@AnubisSolvang Yes, but the point is that whatever it is will be a lot slower developing than any earth analog just because of the cold. And maybe there's nothing there at all because of this. One of the things oft ignored about the earth is precisely that its extrme biomes are all completely surrounded by a generally balmy biosphere full of living things, which means that the amount of interactions/experiments in the boundry areas are essentially endless, whether we're talking about the ocean/land boundry, molecular acid, high radiation or the Arctic. Billions perish, one succeeds and now you potentially have an "extremophile", and OMG that's the worst name ever. I miss when scientists at least tried to pretend to be professionals... Anyway, you have limitless attempts at this as long as there's life in the surrounding medium. And you're not going to have that on Titan or anywhere else in this solar system. It 's all just one large, extreme biome. More extrreme by far than our extreme biomes here. So just because there are comparable conditions in some places on earth, relatively speaking, the two situations as a whole are not comparable.
