  2. The RightStuff Actually no the west knew perfectly well that hitler planned mass murder and they did nothing and sent in their corporations to build up nazi Germany. The USSR offered Britain and France an anti nazi alliance in 1935 but they rejected it.

  7. Michael Barnett Actually Japan surrendered in the end out of fear of a soviet invasion and the Soviet Union could’ve easily liberated Western Europe.

  8. Michael Barnett Actually no. Japan’s main fear was the Russian invasion of Manchuria at the end of the war and they surrendered to America to stop a soviet attack. To say America liberated Western Europe is also wrong. Unlike in Eastern Europe where the Soviets fought alone or at most with partisans the UK and the Western European resistance played as much of a role as America.

Michael Barnett Many historians agree with me that Japan not only feared a soviet attack more than the bomb, but that America used the nuclear bomb to defeat Japan before the Soviets could invade and that the only reason for the eventual peace treaty was both sides desire to not have a Soviet Japan in future. On the point about soviet occupation, both the Soviets and the west set up their own blocs and the Eastern European countries were no less independent from the USSR than the Western European countries were from America. In France and especially Italy there was also a willingness to turn communist so without liberation by western powers I can see both countries becoming independent socialist states like Yugoslavia thanks to their strong resistances. By the way the guy who wrote the black book of communism said he made the numbers up. Members of my family were killed under Stalin but he didn’t somehow wipe out 60 million people.
