  11. Sound of Sleep You said the glory days of the Soviet Union are imagined, I used the example of space travel to counter that. Word of advice, don’t talk about a country if all your information about it is from the propaganda of a rival country and system. Please also explain to me how going from a mediaeval country to a space travelling superpower with similar living standards to Western Europe (without any of the sickening poverty seen in Western Europe) in a few decades isn’t amazing and rightfully looked back on fondly.

Don’t know how a bunch of fascists tearing down a statue reflects the opinion of the country unless you’re calling all Ukrainians fascists. You do realise that it was the west that appeased Hitler and Stalin tried to forge an alliance to defeat him. The allies refused this alliance so he was forced to sign a non aggression pact with Hitler to delay the war.

  25. Janet Rodgers So you’re saying you’re old enough to remember when the west was pumping out anti communist propaganda? Come on that makes you even less reliable than a young American. Russia is no less free than the US however it’s true that it’s still not an ideal level of freedom. We were freest under Lenin and most prosperous under Brezhnev. What you should understand is that until recently people didn’t care if putin was in bed with the oligarchs because he saved Russia from the disaster of Yeltsin’s neoliberalism and stood up to the west. Now people are realising that Putins version of capitalism is just as bad.

  26. Janet Rodgers Obviously many left the eastern bloc due to the poverty after ww2 but they didn’t stay to experience the huge rise in living standards. Most people emigrated because the US pumped money into Western Europe and gave us nothing.
