  1. This could have been avoided during the Civil War. Had William Tecumseh Sherman brought Gen. Herman Haupt (of the Pennsylvania Railroad) along with him in his march through Georgia, instead of making "Sherman's neckties" out of heated rails, they could have regauged to standard, and improved Sherman's supply lines. The Rebels wouldn't have been able to use their own rolling stock, but the Yankees would have been able to roam at will, especially if Haupt regauged any Southern track he encountered.
