@santiagocortez9554 - In those days, a 5-year-old car was a clunker. Back then, odometers only read to 99,999.9 miles, because 100k was high mileage, and 200k was almost unheard of. Some of today's cars regularly hit 200k or far more.

@eajosephedward - The filler was often behind the license plate on many 1960s and 1970s cars. It was supposed to be convenient because you could pull to either side of the pump.

I owned a 1959 Olds 98, the top of the Olds line and just a couple of steps below the Cadillac. It had no seat belts at all!
11
Studebaker.

The one carlength per 10 mph recommendation has been superseded by the 2 second rule. Some people want to change that to 4 seconds, but that is too far back. I recommend 2 seconds on dry pavement, 3 seconds in the rain and 4 seconds in the snow.

I was at the Oldsmobile Homecoming car show in June 2007 in Lansing, Michigan. Those "old Olds that's still rolling right along" in the video were the Curved Dash models built between 1901 and 1907, and were the featured cars at Homecoming 2007. A half-dozen or so, dating between 1903 and 1907, participated in a motorcade around the show grounds. It's very impressive that cars more than a century old could do such a thing UNDER THEIR OWN POWER!
10
David Peterson - And the Gowanas Expressway (also known as the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway) was a parking lot at most times by the turn of the 21st century.

At 6:01, you're supposed to STOP for that pedestrian, not blow your horn for him. Even in the 1960s when this was filmed, had this been California, the driver would have been stopped and ticketed.
8
Very little wear if you drop by one gear (these were 3-speed transmissions), let out the clutch and let the engine drag and compression slow you down.
7
The moral of the story is, in Smokey Bear's voice, "Only YOU...can SET forest fires!"
7
This video is literally 80 years ahead of its time by predicting autonomous cars, which are now making their debut.
7
One would think that auto manufacturers would have taken this as a hint to introduce turbocharging or supercharging at a much earlier date. Several high-end cars did use superchargers during that era.
7
Anywhere in rural Pennsylvania. They make a left from the gutter side of the white fog line, and cross the double yellow line into the oncoming lane to turn right.
6
@02chevyguy - Yes, Bewitched did use a Frigidaire stove for its first 6 seasons. The set caught fire in 1970, and the Salem episodes were filmed so the set could be rebuilt. ~Bill Stephens

The Mopars and Studebakers were the most attractive cars of the late '50s. GM and Ford were positively ugly by comparison. Ford took until '61 to catch up, with its finless Lincoln. GM didn't become attractive until '65.
4
orange70383 - They always dressed nicely for formal occasions, and doing a radio show was such an occasion. They also dressed up for planes, trains and ocean voyages.
4
NipkowDisk - My dad had a '66 Chevy pickup truck that made that same sound!
4
Anywhere in New Jersey. Self-service is illegal in that state. Gasoline there can be 50 cents less per gallon than in Pennsylvania.
4
I wonder how many of these boys are alive here in 2018? They would be a minimum of 80 years old. If they were as young as 16 in 1954, they would have been born no later than 1938.
3
lee nevin - Most cars of that era didn't even offer seat belts as an option. I once owned a '59 Olds 98, the top of the Oldsmobile line, and not far below a Cadillac. It had power windows and optional backup lights, but absolutely no seat belts.
3
Now we have "robots" that shift the gears. My '92 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon "robotically" controls cabin temperature. We also replaced a lot of union auto workers with robots.
3
The Frigidaire stove also helped with Bewitched's other original sponsor, Quaker Oats.
3
The Citroën DS probably had the best suspension ever invented. You didn't even need a jack to change a flat tire!
3
Evening rush hour was 4:30-6:00 pm? In Philadelphia, rush hour goes from 2:30-6:30 pm!
3
American Motors was the main sponsor of the "Disneyland" TV show.
3
@planetX15 - No way was this filmed in 1956. I see several '63 and '64 Fords.
3
Drum brakes that fade at high speeds, and bias tires.
3
manhoot - How does that explain the fact that the German autobahn system, which largely has no speed limits at all, have a better safety record than the U.S. interstate highway system, which has no speed limit higher than 80 mph? (TX 130 is not part of the interstate system, but has an 85 mph limit)
3
Easy choice. Imperial.
2
@oldieznut1 - Do you mean a Tesla that will beat any muscle car on the dragstrip? 0-60 in under 2 seconds?
2
@isaacsrandomvideos667 - It appears that the '61 Plymouth grille inspired the 2021 Lexus grille!!
2
@isaacsrandomvideos667 - Does the Lexus have push button transmission? ;-)
2
MisterSchmengie - '49 Lincoln.
2
And she was a '58.
2
@trudygreer2491 - They were chasing Chrysler for styling as far back as 1956. They were chasing Studebaker from 1953!!
2
@josephg41 - Studebaker introduced a new Champion for '53. It was at least a decade more advanced than anything from the Big Three. In fact, it resembled a 1963 car!
2
The only reference to Thurl Ravenscroft that I have seen!
2
As is counted just about everywhere. 2 lanes in each direction = 4 lanes total.
2
@drgabe2908 - Hudson did it with a 6-cylinder!
2
I'm here because of "The Many Voices of Thurl Ravenscroft," a Disney Legend, but who was best known as the voice of Tony the tiger from Kellogg's Frosted Flakes.
2
smithraymond09029 - There was at least one Latino competitor, Frank Jimenez.
2
Kidding aside, those door handles were literally more than 10 years ahead of their time. GM and Ford didn't introduce them until 1971.
2
He also played a locomotive engineer in "Broadway Limited," a romcom set on the flagship train of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
2
Now they just plug in one plug under your steering wheel.
2
@Holiday48000 - You were just re-entering a new conservative era in 1954, the year after Ike took office. Prior to him, we had a democratic socialist government from 1933-1953.
2
Bill Thompson - October 27, 1966. I just watched that video about his never-to-happen vision of EPCOT at Walt Disney World being a community of 20k people. Disney died less than 2 months later.
2
The first two bars of "Lincoln-Mercury Leads The Way" sounds a LOT like "In My Merry Oldsmobile"!
2
What do you expect for 1938? Dolby digital surround-sound?? Films only got sound only 11 years earlier!
2
itsmegp46 - I had a '67 Dodge Dart that had a radio delete plate. It also had 3 on the tree, too!
2
My father bought one brand new in Levittown, PA. It was a two-tone green post coupe. Silent color home movies survive to this day, as he drove it in a parade with his fire company.
