  1. Hungary is not a homogeneous country. WWI broke out because the multicultural and multiethnic empire wouldn’t hold. Even as it’s smaller now, it’s Germans in the northeast and Saxons on the southwest, with Magyars, east and south Slavs, and Szekeys in between.

  3. All presidents like that will have problems in international cities like Budapest. It’s beautiful, but too many people from outside Hungary have too much sway with how it’s run, and they will co-opt disaffected natives to their outsider whims.

  4.  @PeterT-i1w  Transylvania Saxons have been there since the 1200s. Even Dracula knew them. Germans were expelled from Hungary by Jewish communists after WWII, but that wasn’t sweeping or permanent. Google “danuaschwabian.” Hungary’s most famous person, Ferenc Puskas, wasn’t ethnically Hungarian but “Danube Swabian” — a migrant from Bavaria invited into Hungary after the Ottoman invasions depopulated it. Hungary is a goulash of ethnicities, as it’s been one of the most invaded places on earth.
