  37. Warsaw rebuilt its historical district - the Stare Miasto - from scratch after WW2, built a highway right under it, and still got the designation from UNESCO. Dresden is now rebuilding its Neumarkt, with new housing and commercial units built all around the Frauenkirche. Potsdam is now doing the same, rebuilding extensively around the state parliament building. All of these target younger people to own homes of their own, right in the middle of their downtown areas.

They're building new housing developments but in the style of old buildings from before the war. The usual mindset here is that, since you own the house, you can do and build whatever you want, which is definitely much better. Place a store, a garage, a garden, or extend your home, none of your neighbors will care. Some of the older communities, mostly built in the 90s, have started to develop main streets with all the amenities: shops, groceries, restaurants, even pawnshops. They're great!
