So true. One of the hardest tunes for me to tackle was Wes Montgomery's "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face". It sounds so pretty and rich, but because of the slow tempo I assumed that it was going to be a walk in the park.....wrong. Mastering the chord melody and getting the phrasing right was a lot harder than any Van Halen tune played at break neck speed while having all the effects and reverb at full capacity.

But it's still Yacht Rock. Don't get so bent out of shape.

It's just a sign of the times. We live in a hyper dynamic environment now where short attention spans call the shots. Back in the day, playing guitar was considered cool, and if you were good at it you were exalted to deity status for lack of a better word. When I attended college in the 80's, I studied music on the side and I was proficient playing compositions by Bach, Tansman, Scarlatti, Antonio Lauro, etc. The girls were eating it up, but nowadays? Not so much. Nobody cares about your musical prowess anymore in social settings.

@BS-vx8dg Spot on.

@Tubes12AX7k "Him" by that same artist is actually a pretty good song with a catchy chorus.

Matteo can play any style and well! Check out his gypsy jazz rendition of Hungaria. He can also make a guitar swing in addition to unleashing virtuoso chops!

Jazz artists and studio musicians often suffer from this elitist disease. They can't take a joke and believe wholeheartedly that all their songs are magnum opus material.

"Old Man Yells at Cloud"

I've seen it in more obscure Indie pop too. The chorus of Hysterical Us by Magdalena Bay sounds a lot like Jackson Brown's "Somebody's Baby."

Taylor isn't fretting about her failed relationships and she isn't depressed...trust me. She's just relying on her AI random word generator songwriting formula to fleece as much money as possible from "Swifties" who identify with the melodramatic lyrics.

A lot of garbage out there, but there are a couple of gems that were released the last couple of years. You probably never heard of Diamond Cafe but check out "Body Weak" (diamond cut version). We're talking Michael Jackson / Prince level stuff. Some unknown kid from B.C. writing some amazing stuff.

This trend has everything to do with the advent of streaming, social media, etc. We no longer live in a linear timeline. Anyone can you-tube or Google videos of music styles from days gone by and relive it as if it's happening in the present. The world is flat. A ten year old kid from Saskatoon can become a master at playing music styles from the Ivory Coast just by immersing himself in the genre by way of Youtube.

Complicated indeed! "Life on Mars" by David Bowie ranks up there as well.

Check out the original (The Ghetto) by Donny Hathaway. It rocks!

I heard from reliable sources that Rick is a closet Swiftie.

It kind of reminds me a bit of Django Reinhardt's Improvisation #1 and #2. A compilation of several musical ideas expressed in an improvisational style.

Right??And what about lyrics from the "hair metal" band era? Pure garbage.

Interesting! The same thing happened to me when I found this album on vinyl somewhere around 1983 and began emulating what I was hearing. It changed my taste in music overnight, along with learning how to play Choros (Villa Lobos) and Danza Pomposa (Tansman). All my rock albums became paper weights over night.

Because the bar is now set higher with the advent of Youtube, a virtuoso is now classified as anyone who can play a difficult tune at breakneck speed while simultaneously riding a unicyle and juggling bowling pins.

The worst thing about the 80's was the rock/ hair metal scene. Complete garbage vacuous song writing style played by wannabe "musicians" with rhythm sections that couldn't even keep a back beat. It reminds of what Rick just showcased in this bit from an artistry caliber perspective.

Rick - There's still a lot of creativity in the Indie Pop scene IMO. It's not "rock" in the traditional sense but still quality music. For example, check out Mild High Club (Me Myself and Dollar Hell). Check out the guitar solo....you'll be impressed and will probably practice like hell trying to get that 15 second guitar gem solo down in your playing arsenal. Released in 2023.
