Very sad because he probably confused mitigating his socially awkward people skills by befriending bears with an animal welfare agenda. The narrator mentioned him getting into an argument with an airline employee over the ticket price, but he probably got into a lot of verbal altercations during his life. His bear interactions fell into the "seeing the forest for the trees" concept.
