What leads you to that conclusion?

Have you seen the GDP per capita for the north VS the south? It was built of the backs of factory workers and their owners.

@JFCotman https://www.statista.com/chart/amp/9358/us-gdp-by-state-and-region/ 5 Union states are contributing <2.9% to the GDP, only 2 southern. Slavery is an inferior economic system.

@JFCotman You were asking for the GDP of the North and South without a specific time period but I can still score even if you move the goalposts. The North had 3 times as much GNP as the south did. It showed as well. According to Frederick Law Olmsted described graphically the unfavorable, even wretched living conditions of many of the Southerners they met, Olmsted even asserting that nine-tenths of the neighbors of gentlemen he met “for a hundred miles around them lived in a manner which, if witnessed at the North, would have made them objects of compassion to the majority of our day-laborers.” My point was that any sucessful economy requires a system in which people are incentivised to work hard, like in the industrial north. In slavery, the only reason you work is because of the repercussions if you don't. Sharecropping also shares the same problem.

If you think this is nonsense you can ask Victoria E. Bynum, James M. McPherson, Gordon S. Wood, James Oakes, Richard Carwardine and Clayborne Carson.

Who wouldn't moan about the moral and economic inferiority of slavery?
