Claiming the flight CAUSED the relaxation of tensions may be one space bridge too far. Us and the Russians really got connected only after the collapse of the ideologically antagonistic Soviet regime. ASTP just represented the already in progress mid-1970s Brezhnev-Nixon détente period [it did NOT cause it, as the crews always insisted] that actually soon collapsed with the Afghanistan and Angolan invasions and incidents such as the KAL-007 massacre.
