I declare "who cares" and "move on"
99
@FashA.-du5ki good for you? Nobody cares.
68
@monaelkhairy4167 I bet you'll forget about it in a week when there isn't something to virtue signal about.
68
Google found the one thing that would make me switch to a different browser. That is impressive! I've been using Chrome for over a decade at this point.
59
Holy C was JIT/interpreted C. It was honestly one of the best innovations on C ever created. Unfortunately due to Terry's condition it will never make it into the mainstream but the concept is truly genius. Imagine being able to bootstrap uncompiled kernel modules lazily as they are needed. Dude was on another level.
54
@blarghblargh I wouldn't be here if the cry bullies weren't trying to cancel a piece of software over politics.
47
@that_leaflet I'm glad you left it up. Conversations like this are important. We need to see the fallout that Linus was warning us about when people introduce politics into FOSS development.
38
They will try and fork it but they won't go anywhere with it.
26
That is hilarious. They're turning CVEs into a joke.
23
@qtpaulie it sure is 🤗 show me where it says "freedom of speech except for hate speech"
22
The free in free and open stands for freedom. Ironic that they banned someone for what totally qualifies as free speech.
21
@guyblack9729 it was a surprisingly nuanced video. Brodie did a great job staying out of the politics of the situation. The great part of free software is that it's free. You can do whatever you want with it. Unfortunately the community is full of cry bullies that will try and ruin someone over politics.
20
@BrodieRobertson I hope vaxry knows that he has support. He has created one of the best tiling desktop environments ever. He needs guidance not shame.
20
@miguelguthridge bro I'm gay and use the f word all the time. You are being sensitive. Grow thicker skin.
19
@TheSast Lmao nice bro. We appreciate the help even if it was redundant 😂 Edit you didn't warn me of the pride... Why in the world would they make that the default functionality
18
@miguelguthridge you don't have to accept anything but you don't get to decide what other people say. You get the choice to participate or not and you've made your choice apparent. If you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen. Now, as far as professionalism I think if they're going to have a discord centered around the project it should be professional and pointed at the topic as to detach itself as much as possible from politics.
18
I think it's entirely reasonable to request he be professional in his communications around the project. Nobody is arguing on that point. What is not okay is trying to subvert an open source project because the maintainer wouldn't be forced into using preferred pronouns. Additionally, using a red hat email and not clarifying the "we" in "we will take action" seems purposefully deceitful. But that's just my opinion. I understand those email addresses aren't endorsements.
14
@Rexhunterj yeah because going with freedom hating Firefox is any better. What should I be using IE or Safari too? Acting like there's any actual alternatives that are any better.
11
This is the way! Even though I disagree with your politics we can set that aside to embrace Free and Open software.
11
@roundduckkira professionalism is about staying on topic and avoiding distractions.
9
@freesoftwareextremist8119 look at how much confusion has been manufactured simply because they won't call a man "he."
8
@oraz. Can't agree more.
8
@blarghblargh you're right. Societies utilizing pronouns to communicate the biological and societal differences between the sexes for tens of thousands of years is totally irrelevant.
7
@tacokoneko can we go back to fighting about technical details please 😂
7
@CptJistuce true, it's better
7
@roundduckkira I think it's reasonable to expect professionalism in a discord that is based around a software project.
6
@currentsubset6885 demanding professionalism is one thing. Demanding he use someone's "preferred pronouns" is different.
6
@ZugTheDragon in spirit it absolutely does. Freedom of speech in spirit means the freedom to express ones beliefs without persecution.
6
@jellifygirl did you just add a tone description to your comment? Are you serious? 😂
6
KDE did not adopt hyprcursor for political reasons. Why would I switch to a technology that inserts politics into software requirements?
6
@GSBarlev you're likely not a normie. Your definition is likely not the same as his. And your negative connotation towards gatekeeping is wrong. Gatekeeping or filtering is a great tool for ensuring a certain level of quality within a group or system. It is not appropriate everywhere but when applied appropriately it certainly creates a better outcome.
5
@formbi combining GNU/Linux is stupid. Not every distro uses GNU. What most people are speaking about is unix style OS tooling like OpenBSD, GNU, BusyBox, etc. They all rely on Linux and the minor differences between the apis don't really matter. FreeBSD distros are still Linux distros and id refer to them as "Linux"
5
@roundduckkira or maybe people trying to disassociate sex and gender is the root of the issue and not a "flaw in the English language." If you'd just call the man "he" there'd be 0 confusion.
5
@blarghblargh to clarify what you're saying, you think homophobia is less tolerable than transphobia? I don't disagree or agree either way. I think the difference is that being gay is an objective attribute where being "trans" is an abstract feeling.
5
@fish3977 you haven't even made an argument. No, software does not have to be political. It wasn't political for decades and only now has been taken over by ideologues.
5
Have you ever noticed that GitHub doesn't have a fast forward merge option? It's ridiculous that GitHub the #1 git repo service does not support a fundamental feature of git. This for example forces me to use rebase onto the development branch but when I want to get my master branch up to speed I have to use a merge commit causing "master is x commits ahead of development" even though it is entirely the same as far as the code is concerned.
4
Just treat each as its own window. Problem solved. It's up to the user to manage the Windows and rules for each window.
4
@roundduckkira I'd love to respond but my comments continue to get deleted regardless of being relatively mild.
4
@lucyinchat I never said we should compel any speech. Actually I'm arguing for the exact opposite.
4
@jellifygirl Gay has a concrete definition that is qualifiable. Are you attracted to the same sex? Then you are gay, if not then you're not gay. With trans it's not the same. There's an undefinable number of genders because according to these gender studies types gender is abstract and is just a feeling. Your idea of gender lacks a concrete definition. It can literally be anything. It's synonymous to identity in many ways to you. I can't qualify a trans person because there is no objective measure to being trans. It can change every moment of every second according to the abstract definition. I'm exhausted making this argument if you don't understand the original purpose of gender, sex, and pronouns in society then you need to read up on it yourself.
4
@GSBarlev I wasn't referring to the desktop environment situation I was speaking generally. My comment regarding the desktop environment conversation was that I think vaxry and him have different definition of normie.
3
@KeithBoehler exactly, we live in a capitalist economic system meaning we have supply and demand. The guy has allowed the supply be infinite even while the demand skyrocketed and still gave away his awesome project for free. We need to pressure companies who profit the most from these FOSS projects most to sponsor projects like these or risk most large FOSS becoming pay-to-maintain for new features. Feature bounties would be terrible but might be necessary if these multi-billion dollar a year companies don't sneeze a shares worth of value at these projects every quarter.
3
@originzz well I'm pretty young so you're going to have to wait awhile before I die off
3
@nobodyspecial1553 I believe the second amendment makes it clear that secession was intended to only be a last straw measure sought through war. The legal avenue for a state to secede is through a constitutional amendment otherwise the union has the right to defend it's states against secessionists and the secessionists have the right to fight back if the deem the federal government illegitimate. It's all about perspectives. This may not apply to Texas though since they are a special case historically but I digress.
3
@RandomNonsense1985 what makes you think we're extreme right wing? Or are you projecting your bias on others? We're discussing constitutional history. Nothing "right wing" about it.
3
@mopeybloke I don't think anyone was criticizing Brodie.
3
@smearfo5612 that makes more sense in context
3
@anon_y_mousse you're correct about BSD, I learned something new. I stand by the comment excluding BSD
2
@roundduckkira are you using "they" as a third person ambiguous pronoun or are you trying to use they/them pronouns? See how unnecessarily confusing they make this?
2
@originzz what you said has nothing to do with what has been discussed.
