I traveled to the UK from NZ in the late 80s as a 19 year old for a working holiday, as many Kiwis and Aussies do. Rented a room in North London off a really nice old lady. First morning in the place, I was awoken by a very loud guttural wailing which repeated 3 times at various times during the day. The landlady said it was the “calling to prayer” which was blasted thru multiple loud hailers on a pole. None of the locals were consulted or asked, and local authorities weren’t interested in hearing any complaints. The place is far worse now I imagine.
