In 87/88 while on a working holiday in the UK from NZ, i went to the Notting Hill "carnival" and although it was nowhere near as....diverse, as it is now it was still pretty violent, I remember their were large groups of "youths" running through the crowd in the opposite way to the flow of people snatching handbags and belongings, the press called them "steamers". Lovely event if you like the risk of being robbed or assaulted.
