  4. I made the very bad mistake of buy a BMW once, an E90 M3 with the S65 4.0L. I bought it when they were still a current model and the faults which are now well documented were not common knowledge. Mine had the Throttle Body Actuators fail, and the dreaded rod bearings starting making noises, when i replaced them they were heavily worn. Fixed it, sold it, bought an IS-F Lexus which ive had for 7 years, and it hasn't missed a beat.

Theres a channel called "Customer states what?" by a mechanic that works in an Audi dealership (or a shop that deals with loads of Audis) and the amount of rust on the underside of new and nearly new Audis is alarming. Another great channel is "Just rolled in" mechanics showing the complete pieces of crap they are asked to work on and the funny descriptions the customers think are the problems.

  9. Look for the engines Taxi fleets use, (as a general rule of thumb) here in NZ the Australian developed and built "Barra" 4.0 inline 6 is known to be bulletproof and racks up huge Kms. Lexus, consistently is No 1 for reliability and customer satisfaction, but Toyota in general, Honda also are probably top. Nissan USED to make great engines in the 90s during the Japanese factories "Golden era" (80s/90s) but now have fallen from grace, possibly merging with Renault and Dongfeng?? had something to do with this :-)

  13. My son had a ex Japan, 04 Type R Integra, it had Japanese scrutineering/track stickers and Spoon sports parts/stickers on it so had most likely been used for track days/Gymkhanas back in Japan, But it went very well for a 2 litre NA, and handled really well for a FWD.

  19. The timing belts are on the drivers side in my country, (and any Ex Japan ones that got imported 2nd hand), making it even tighter due to brake booster and other shit.

  22. I'm pretty sure they are, some of them are real rough. At 8:40 he says "If this head were to be salvaged" which tells me these engines are destined to be scrapped.

  23.  @colinjohnson5515  The Fram=Crap thing came about when people started cutting open new fram filters and finding rust and very poor quality materials inside. Plus filtration tests showed they constantly scored at, or near the bottom.

I bought a absolutely mint, 45,000 mile, 99 Camry with one of these in it, as a work hack to save fuel and Kms being racked up on my IS-F, and ive grown to love the thing, its smooth as silk, quiet, you don't feel every ripple in the road, like you do in the IS-F and its been boringly reliable, the perfect everyday car.

  28. Because of its placement with minimal air getting to it, the power steering unit has its own cooler/heat exchanger in front of the radiator. Well, the Aussie assembled Camrys sold in my country do anyway. :-)

  29. Non interference. There is some confusion over this as some sites on the Net list this as an interference engine. this in incorrect, it is 100% NON interference, doesn't matter on the year, if its a 1MZ-FE its NON interference. Heres a guy proving it. https://youtu.be/0o-TXIWVHwg

  32.  @kclefthanded427  Any auto made in china will most likely be atrocious, i once saw a chinese knock off of a Honda 50cc generator engine, the Honda made ones are legendary in their longevity, this one had no sump plug and no oil filler cap, the oil was put in through the tappet ajuster screw cap at the factory and was supposed to last the lifetime of the engine, which wasnt very long, then when it popped you were supposed to buy another. CCP ? Complete Crap Producers.

  37. You think engineers have the final say? No, it’s the bean counters you have to thank for plastic parts on your engine. Although I’m sure a few engineers/designers would be into the whole “designed obsolescence” thing.

  45. We only use Toyota diesel’s at the commercial vehicle rental company I work for, they last and handle the treatment from customers way better than the Mercedes and Renault vans we’ve tried. The absolute worst ones were the Chinese DAF copies, they lasted one whole month before we got rid of them.

  48.  @speedkar99  I'm always on the lookout for one of the 4th gen XV20 special edition TRD supercharged, V6, 5 speed manuals called the Camry TS Supercharged, that was put together specially by Toyota NZ. Ive only seen 2 and both owners didn't want to sell. They are still, just a Camry, and don't make much HP compared to modern cars, but still would be cool to own and drive. :-))

  52.  @speedkar99  Mazda Rotaries used to be very common in dismantlers yards and scrap yards here in NZ, the RX 2,3,7,8 rotaries were sold here (new and imported 2nd hand from Japan) from the early 70s right thru till they stopped making them. I remember asking a dismantler for one just to pull it down to see how it worked, and they just gave it to me. But now they are getting pricey here too. Kiwis love their "Rota Motors" :-)

  53.  @chrisbradley3224  Here in NZ we get a lot of 2nd hand cars from Japan as we drive on the same side of the road. The BMW i bought had only 15,000 km (about 9500 miles) and was less than a year old, i got it for about 1/3 of the price of a new one. Same thing with the ISF it was a 2nd hand Japanese car, they were about 160,000 NZ dollars when new😳I got mine for 30,000. Just needed to change the infotainment system to a modern non Japanese speaking one🤣(the bmw already had it done by the dealer) The 2UR-GSE 5.0 litre in the ISF is easily a match for the 4.0 in the BMW, and is far more reliable, the handling at track speeds is a step behind, but on the road its not and issue, The auto? a manual would make that car epic, but at least its a good solid box that has a rep for not giving trouble, and again for daily driving on the road, which is what the car is used for its fine. I'm just waiting and hoping to find a nice low Km J import Alfa Romeo giulia quadrifoglio, and get back into Euro money pits.😄😄

  57. They are perfectly fine if you replace them at, or before the time recommended with, with Toyota ones. Plus its a non interference engine so if worst happens, you won't lunch your engine. Having said that, the 2UR-GSE in my IS-F has chains, and im glad it does. :-))
