@Jodie Holmes I like how you are trying to change the goal posts once you realised you were wrong about state universities being being subject to the first amendment . With respect to speakers invited by university groups or bodies, here’s what universities can do: Universities can establish regulations and can deny requests “if they have reason to believe that the speaker will advocate violent rebellion against the government or immediate, destructive, and disruptive action against the host institution.” Otherwise, “courts have held that when an audience brings someone to campus to speak, the school bears a constitutional responsibility not to interfere.”

@Jodie Holmes let’s not get off subject here The bottom line is that state universities are subject to the first amendment Secondly, these universities have very limited scope to deny speakers invited by university groups and they have a constitutional responsibility not to interfere. They can try other underhanded means to bypass their constitutional responsibilities such as safety concerns I have enjoyed this discussion as it did force me to do some more research and I hope beside losing the argument that you have enjoyed it too.

@Jonathan Waters Is that why conservative speakers are prevented from speaking on certain campuses even though they were invited by conservative groups? examples are Ben Shapiro , Milo Yiannopoulus, Ann Coulter, Jordan Peterson, Christina Hoff Summers to name a few.

@Jodie Holmes these institutions receive government funding so unless they allow people to exercise their first amendment rights on campus they may lose their funding.. If they don’t care about government funding then they can continue shutting down free speech and find funding to keep their little leftist safe space afloat from elsewhere.
