  7. @Deb Hammersley you’ve got the taxes wrong . Aus $ 18000 is equivalent to around US $12000 and both systems result in zero tax. An Aus $90000 income would result in a tax of Aus $ 18390, in the US Aus $90000 is equivalent to US$60000 which has an equivalent tax of Aus$9600. So in the US the taxes are significantly less . Australia also has a Medicare Levi ranging from1.0 % to 1.5% to pay for the public health cover and you pay for it whether you have private coverage or not. Australia also has a GST of 10% so cost of living is a lot higher in Australia. Everyone believes there should be affordable universal basic health cover, however Bernie wants comprehensive cover for everyone including the millions of illegal immigrants living in the US. That means dental , optical etc. In Australia Medicare does not cover dental , optical or any other ancillaries and I note again that everyone above a certain income pays for this universal healthcare through a Medicare Levy. The next problem with Australian Medicare is the waiting period for elective surgery on things like knee or hip replacements where people could be waiting over a year to get the surgery. Australia also doesn’t have free university education and Bernie wants that as well. All these things will increase the tax rate, for example in Denmark where education and healthcare is “free” the effective tax rate Is around 60%. I also don’t think it’s fair that tax payers should pay for the University education of others. If you want to further your education then you pay for it yourself and I’m happy with using a HECS like system for the US
