Here’s a quote directly from the prime minister of Denmark who recently remarked in a lecture at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, “I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.”

  8. @Kristin Aldridge good luck in getting any elective surgery within 12 months on Medicare . That’s why most Australians have private health insurance . As far as the $21 minimum wage goes...you need to ask yourself why so much manufacturing has gone offshore. It’s because wages are too high in Australia and to be competitive these businesses have no option but to take their manufacturing to cheaper labour countries

  9. @Kristin Aldridge Medicare actually does cover elective surgery...it’s just that to get it you usually have to wait in line for 12 or so months t9 get it from any doctor and in a public hospital . Capitalism isn’t imperialism, capitalism is what has brought many third world countries out of poverty. It is what has driven innovation and created jobs. Capitalism may not be the perfect system but it is way better than any of the other alternatives.

  10. @Kristin Aldridge Medicare does cover elective surgery... it’s as I said , you have to wait in line with all the other people who don’t have private health insurance and this could mean waiting 12 months or more. You could get private insurance but as you said there is usually a 12 month waiting period for preexisting conditions. The Medicare levy is paid by everyone including those who also have private health insurance so they get hit twice for health cover . If you’re earning $100000 a year then your Medicare levy is $2000 plus another say $3000 to $4000 for private health insurance really adds up. In terms of being able to pay your staff more because you don’t have to provide health insurance . All that means is that you have to increase the price of your goods to be able to afford to cover your overheads , in other words the cost is past on the customer. You need to ask your self why Australia has one of the highest cost of living in the world and it’s because of the high cost of wages , electricity. Etc.
