  1. As an aside it should be mentioned that the subcontinent was primarily ruled by a Muslim elite when the East India Company arrived as foreign merchants. Their commercial interests led to machinations that eventually deposed the local rulers. Only with independence as a democracy was Hindu majority rule reestablished.
