  1. 1000% agree. It's ironic, the moment I finally realized how much I love the freedom of biking is when I got my drivers license. I was 18 and had a few thousand euros from some investment funds my parents had set up for me at birth. So why not? It seemed sensible and nice to drive. Only when I was already at the end of my training and ready to take my exams and get my license it dawned on me that I fucking hate driving a car! Not in the least because Dutch infrastructure is purposefully hostile to driving in cities. But I just felt so constrained! All the freedom you have on a bike is not there in car. Instead of going anywhere I damn pleased and being able to see traffic rules as optional if the situation allowed for it I found myself often taking much longer to get somewhere by car by having to go around no-car-zones, and because I was in a 1000 kg steel box going 10s of km/h, I had to strictly follow every rule because if you don't, that can mean you seriously injure or kill someone, and because you have to be on high alert and check multiple things at once all the time because you're closed off from your environment I found it exhausting too. I got my license 6.5 years ago and haven't driven a car once in 5. In 99% of cases my transportation needs are met by bike or if going to another city, by just plopping down in a train and doing whatever I want until my destination, and from there take the bus, tram, metro or OV-bike. And that 1% I actually do need a car if something heavy needs to go somewhere, I can ask my dad or a friend. If I ever find myself in a situation where I need a car more often I'll probably opt for an electric Smart or something.
