Jake Dean I think they may more be playing with the strict ideas society has about men and women, but not necessarily share those opinions. It doesn't matter if you're cis or trans or non-binary, you wont be able to escape the preconceived notions of what society thinks men and women are and should be. And just as many binary trans people conform to strict ideas of how their gender should look (for many reasons including passing), so do non-binary people often have a mix of seemingly stereotypical traits of both genders. But I don't know if they have much of a choice. Just as with binary trans people, if you don't make it obvious many people will not believe you. And even though nothing is inherently male or female, especially not things like clothing and hair styles and how you look in general, you still have to live in a society where those rules apply. And it makes sense to use those rules to become more your authentic self.

If you for some reason can't help but stand out like a sore thumb when you're just being yourself, sometimes conformity can be freedom, because it grants anonimity. It does become very exhausting after a while though.

@azlizzie Kalvin Garrah hasn't, right? I thought he believed non-binary people exist and are valid, but because he's a transmedicalist believes that to be non-binary you also have to have dysphoria.
