  1. He's saying that if you don't understand why (a lot of) people like something, you're probably missing crucial facts which for other people factor in automatically. I'd say you're stupid for missing that very clear point, but I'm obviously just missing crucial information WHY you didn't get it. If I'd have more information about who you are and what you're like I would't call you stupid, but understand why you missed the point.

  2. How are those not things in which it provides a benefit for you over not doing it? In the first, the taste is the benefit, in the second, relaxation, and in the third, bonding with people you care about. That's what he means with that it 'does things' for people.
