  5. Reminds me of the engines from the the 1950's and 1960's. Oils back then were no where's as good as today's oils so depending on maintenance back then would determine how much sludge was in the engine. This engine had a bad life. Thanks Brian for this video. Memories!

  9. I once bought a brand new FL-1A and it would not screw on to the pipe thread in the oil filter housing. Turned the filter around and OOPS! NO THREADS IN THE FILTER! The Ford dealer gave me a new filter. "Never saw that before" he said. "Ya, me too" I said. Never saw that again, however I've had times when I thought the filter threads were to small for the pipe threads in the oil filter housing, but it was just a really good fit in that I had to move the filter just enough to make it fit on the pipe thread properly.

  12. My wife bought a mid year Buick in 1986. It went from rear wheel to front wheel drive. It was a rolling, intermittent, money pit! You couldn't give me a new vehicle from any Domestic. I've got an 06 Nissan Frontier. It's been a GREAT vehicle! My 2020 Toyota RAV4 is a very good (so far) vehicle. It's a real shame when Asian imports are better than Ford and GM! Thought I'd never say that!

  14. The older 02, 03 V10 one ton vans had that crappy pcv hose that would tear near the throttle body. Using the "WDS" (that's right! this was before the IDS) and a can of Chem Tool and listening, there was the leak. The idle roughness was so bad it shook the van and thankfully the ladder roof racks were tight or there would have been two expensive ladders on the floor! One new upgraded PCV hose assembly later and a very smooth, happy running engine. Good one Brian!

  15. The fun ones are when the vent valve plugs up and it's difficult to refuel. Pushing on the valve stem under the green cap in the engine compartment helped as a temp way during refueling.

  21. That's gonna be a very expensive repair. I'm sure that complete engine replacement is not cheap! This is where a professional like Brian should be maintaining this vehicle. No 10,000 mile oil changes either! It's 3500 to 4000 miles or 6 months which ever comes first! Thank you for this video.

When ever I did a job like that while working in the City Fleet, I usually ordered what I needed, plus, like you, I made sure to order the parts around the job, because as you know, time, mileage, and vibration will cause parts to leak or break. We step up that cause when we remove them if they're in the way. When people would ask why I'm changing other parts beside the original one I say, "I do the job once!" Eliminate comebacks!   26. That's an ongoing problem for many many years now. Aftermarket parts simply don't have the quality put in them like OEM parts, and consequently that leads to engine destruction. My 06 Nissan Frontier had the two chain tensioners that tighten the small intake cam gears to exhaust cam gears chains wore out and making variable noise as the vehicle accelerated. Fortunately I got into it before the metal to metal contact could lead to specs of metal inside the engine. Anyway, I hope the customer gets the vehicle fixed correctly and it's back in service soon.   27. I remember working with the IDS with problem vehicles. Extremely Helpful! I wish aftermarket diag tools had this power for Asian vehicles! I'm saving this video as a very good step-by-step diagnostic test. I know it won't work all the time, but when it does, the answer comes quick! Great video, thanks Brian!

  28. I've never had to do one of these, or the 5.4 3 valve engine, but my former coworkers had done several of both types of engines. Some were blessed with the V10 on Number 5 which is the rear on the passenger side! THAT was not a lot of joy! I believe these engineers should have been the ones to change these with the engine in the vehicle! Thankyou Brian for doing this video. If I owned a Ford with these engines, I would buy that kit. The first two steps using that rubber air blowout is the BEST WAY to start this repair!

  31. My first time at seeing one of these apart. Where I worked before retirement, we had many Ford "F" series, (with 4.6, 5.4. 6.8 engines) but I never saw a phaser let go.

  32. It's obvious the first dealership did not replace the water pump and the other gaskets that are now leaking. The second one should have caught the leaky upper gaskets and fixed them. That's a shame. The customer spent good money for what.....?

  33. Load testing is the best. Use a headlight bulb(s) with a load close to 30 amps gives you plenty of light for working in the area however, the wiper motor is a nice touch. Plus gently holding the gear varies the load which can be helpful also. Nice fix Brian.

  36. Good fix! I never saw that happen to any of the Fords we had in the City Fleet where I worked. We had Fords from 1998 through 2011. When I retired in 2016 a lot of the 03's through 05's were still running.

  40. Reminded me of the 5.4L 2 valve and 6.8L V10 engines. The hold down screw occasionally needed a thread cleaning with a tap.

Being in California we don't normally get downpour rain however, one year we got way over our normal amount and sure enough, one of the 2004 F150's with the 4.6 got the top of the intake and all 8 plugs/coils bathed in water. Barely ran, MIL light on, shaking like crazy. Used my long tube air gun to clean out all the "wells" after removing all the coils. Removed and checked the plugs, they were worn, made sure no moisture got in the combustion chambers using the long tube blow gun, installed new plugs, coils, air filter (it was dirty) cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the engine oil and filter (miles and time) and fired it up. Ran great. Reset the computer memory, road test and I knew the MIL would come back on and yes it did. All the misfiring dumped raw fuel into old cats (truck had over 150,000 odometer miles). So, new cats, new front and rear 02 sensors, another road test, truck ran like a dream for many, many more miles.

  45. The IDS has a great test for the evap leak test. That eliminates a lot when diagnosing a problem.

  50. In the past on older vehicles I used the parking brake to help slow the vehicle during a "Drive Cycle" to set the monitors, because back then, the parking brake was NOT an input to the PCM. Times have changed.
