  2. More often oil and oil filter changes. Also use a high quality synthetic oil with the recommended viscosity by the vehicle/engine manufacturer. Good Diag (and bloopers) on your part! Stay well.

  4. 100,000 Kilometers or 62,500 Odometer Miles. Knowing this, like you I suggest making this part of Periodic Maintenance at every 50,000 Odomer Miles or 80,000 Kilometers. Plus with the fresh fluid change, your helping to extend the life of the unit. Your fluid change procedure is very similar to my 2020 Toyota RAV4 Non Hybrid with an 8 Speed automatic transmission. The Car Care Nut or TCCN has a procedure for changing the fluid in his You Tube Videos. Thank you for this video Dan!

  5. I saw a similar problem in a 91 GMC 3500 1 ton utility body vehicle with the 454 (7.4L) V8 throttle body fuel injected engine. The engine would stall out or almost stall and it was consistent. The problem was in the wiring harness near the "Oil Pressure Sending Unit/Switch." The engine would start when the fuel pressure relay turned on, then when the engine built oil pressure, contacts in the sending unit/switch closed and electrical power would pass through the contacts up the wire to the f.p. relay's output wire to feed the fuel pump. At certain times the wiring harness to the sensor/switch would pull tight and rub against a bolt on the engine eventually shorting out and blowing a fuse. My fix was lengthening the harness and using a tie wrap to support the harness and eliminate the short. Success. Thinking Out Of The Box is part of a technician's job. Thank you for this video.

  8. For training on a Prius, the instructor separated our group into two groups. Before Lunch, one group made safe and removed the battery pack from the vehicle. The other group made safe and removed the Inverter Assembly from the same vehicle. The instructor removed the battery covers and removed one of the cells. Then he removed the Inverter cover. He then explained what went on inside. Then we put the covers back on, reinstalled the Inverter and Battery pack. We then verified the vehicle started, ran, and no codes were present. After lunch, the groups reversed their positions on the second vehicle, removing the battery pack and inverter assembly. Again battery covers and inverter cover were removed, parts identified, reassembled, reinstalled, vehicle started, and no codes. Time in the shop on two vehicles including lunch hour, 6 hours. Time in class room, 1 hour. MY KIND OF TRAINING!

  9. That was a very interesting area where the wire was corroded. Covered by the split loom it should have been well protected. Having the sound tool really helped. Good one Dan!

Another way the Ford instructors and the old Ford scan tools used to say, "Do the wiggle test" where you grab the wiring harness and move it in different directions from one part to another part. The connectors were included in the test. It helped sometimes. Good Diagnostic testing. Your right about the eyes. That was a funny "comic relief" also. I can remember feeling the same way when I couldn't find the problem!

  12. Everytime I see a comm problem in a vehicle, I just hope it's not going to be like some of the vehicles that Ivan runs into for comm problems. This time it worked out well and having that TCU to test with proved the problem. Good one Dan.

  14. Very good diagnosis. Like your screen read, you didn't check the inputs, but this time it was the module. Very Good! Perhaps like G Lasser said an A/C voltage spike took out the driver in the module. I've seen several European vehicles in YouTube videos that have module problems due to a spike in current when the system is turned off. Maybe the OEM does not put a diode in the circuit to dissipate the spike to protect the module. Possible planned obsolescence?

  15. Well, I see Land Rover has the same problem with new parts like everyone else. New does not mean good! Good Diagnosis Dan. I'm surprised there wasn't a filter somewhere between the pump and the output ports for the front, rear and the reservoir.

  16. Very good one Dan! Comm wires can cause a lot of problems as can connections at both ends. Very low currents, intermittent and strange looking signals on the comm lines seem to be more often lately, especially Medium and High Speed can lines. Throw in a module that takes in multiple speed CAN lines and switches those lines and now you've got a real problem!

  17. Thank you Dan for this video AND especially the demonstration! I didn't work on vehicles with DEF systems as retirement was in 2016. The L.A. City Fleet I worked in has gasoline, (or Petrol if you wish) CNG and some PRE-DEF diesel vehicles. I've seen some in IATN, but that's it. Your demo was GREAT!

  21. Thank you for this video. Sometimes the smallest detail can make the difference between the OE part and the aftermarket part. Ivan once said something that made sense. "The internals on the after market part are made different than the OE, and are not compatible with the ECM/PCM program." Perhaps in this case the OE is at a level position and that is where the PCM's program uses that point as a starting reference with the Key On starting point, whereas the aftermarket is positioned further "down" and the PCM's program considers that out of specification thereby setting the code. If you were to bring this video to court and with their permission use it to verify your findings, I'll bet this would clear up everything. Just my opinion.

  23. I remember years ago reading how generically the electric (motor) machine, as they called it, functioned. They went into the resolver, but they may have called it the position locator or just locator. The control module needed to know the exact position of the rotor. The reading material also went into describing how the direction of rotation is known. I've forgotten a lot of that information it's been over 7 years since I retired. The company that put out the books was Napa Auto Parts. I don't know if they still have training information. Good Diagnosis Dan!

  32. I've never worked on one of these. I like the theory of operation. When you said the throttle is usually open, that reminds me of the old non computerized diesel engines. The injector pump controlled the idle.

  33. Pico for the win, proving the problem. When I saw that up rise point in the waveform even with my limited Pico knowledge, immediately I said exhaust valve and timing chain problem. In school we learned 2.54 centimeters or 25.4 milimeters equaled 1 inch. In engine timing THAT'S A LOT! No wonder that poor little engine with a 24 milimeter stretched timing chain couldn't move that car! Well they brought it to the right guy who fixed it. Good one Dan!

  37. You know, that problem answers some questions I've had in the past when I would see a strange readout. Didn't think there was a software problem until I would use the factory unit. Then it was like, "Gee that's strange." Did have a problem with the Snap On "red brick" software in the late 1980's when it was showing P N (Park/Neutral) and the transmission was in drive. So it should have shown R D L . I contacted Snap On about it, got to talk to the lady answering the phone, the technician and the engineer. I told the tech and engineer about the problem and the engineer's answer was "Ya we know." Huh? "Ya we know?" "So when are you gonna fix it?" Next year was the answer. Well it was April or May so we have to wait over 7 months for the new and expensive software cartridge? Engineer. "Yep." I'm not happy with that answer, so I sent in a letter to Motor Magazine when they were printing it and explained what happened. I didn't curse out Snap On, just wrote what happened. They printed it! Since other techs read the magazine, my note was to let others know about the problem. Motor made the comment that my letter had Snap On "just a little concerned." I was mad at "Ya we know", but I wrote that so others wouldn't fire the parts cannon because of a software problem. I hope it worked. Like you Dan, I'll be more aware of this problem. I hope my new Autel tablet won't have problems!

  41. I like your test drive area. Very nice! That's great you had that bulletin. It helped show the damaged hose. (Not Enough Air) I started to think blocked air filter or air inlet, but without a Mass Airflow Sensor reading, it makes the diagnosis more difficult. Great video! Hope the customer was happy. Also if this is a "pattern problem," I hope the OEM has an updated fix.

  44. One of those overlooked steps that should be checked/tested during a no start ESPECIALLY after a timing chain repair/renew job.

  45. Power circuits require a LOAD to test them. LED testers do not have a LOAD like the old incandescent test light or "lawn dart" as a Ford training instructor once called it. Unless there is an LED test light with a LOAD built in to the tester, using a bulb like Dan had or an old glass headlight as the load will work. The amount of fused circuit current will determine the LOAD to be used. And yes, a lot of circuit power problems can be the ground side! Great explanation Dan!

  47. I grew up in Massachusetts (East Coast) so cars, (50's 60's 70's) rusted out quickly from salt/sand application. I'm VERY familiar with that! Living in Southern California now, no salt/sand needed.
