  2. What is wrong with the economy is diminishing returns. For example to produce a ton of copper nowadays we have to process 100s of tons of rock compared to 10 tons or so back in the 19th century. It's the same for mining in general including fossil fuels production. The rust belt collapsed because they used up all the high quality easy-to-mine coal.

  3.  @nietur You need to learn some physics, better machinery can compensate very little for this problem.
