Muddy Fudger ukraine was the breadbasket of the USSR so that seems plausible. however ukraine was treated very well throughout the rest of the USSR's history. for example they were given crimea and other russian territory. also Ukrainian was promoted as a language again, whereas it had been suppressed under the Czars.
