  1. They actually stripped the marble from the palace of the Caesars to reuse in St Peters. It's essentially a Roman government building (that's what a basilica was before it became a Christian thing). St Peter might even recognise the marble if he came back.

  2. @ I've been there mate. the marble came from the Palatine Hill ruins. Trust me I know more than you could ever hope to about the Romans. i did not say the Romans built St Peters, i said it's a basilica which was originally a Roman goverment building design. Understand now?

  3.  @charlesrae3793  Actually the early christians didnt. it was really only after the fall of the western empire that basilicas became religious buildings.
