  1. 1) Hong Kong is no longer very important. 2) Chinese people have no sympathy for the protesters since they are separatists flying US flags and other such nonsense. 3) China doesn't care about a trade deal. Never has cared. They are making a token effort in talks just to be polite. So it's a media event for the likes of CNN and NYT but that's about it.
