I always thought that John the Baptist was a wild Heretic. That's kinda how they presented him in the gospel. Baptism might have just been his thing. They tried to tell him, no you do it here, at this time for this, you're doing it wrong, then he went off and became famous as the "Baptist." Some people thought it was cool, the orthodox (Jewish) faithful didn't. Jesus was a bit heretical in some of the new stuff he was saying, and also later translations kinda make it seem more and more like this was something everyone was doing. When the earlier ones, honestly? I'm pretty sure John was The Baptist. Like the only one, if you wanted to get Baptized, that's cool, but there weren't really any other Baptists wandering around, and giving people impromptu sermons/swimming lessons in rivers. It wasn't a job title, and to some, it could even be taken as an accusation.
