A large part of it from the last century is that in Media, there were only a few avenues for fame and fortune. Sports, of course, a black man could be good at basketball, football (I remember the uproar when there was a black Defenseman in the NHL, despite the 2 female Defensemen in the NHL) boxing... Music until the protest rap of the 90s. Straight Outta Compton, and I'm gonna say OG: Original Gangster shed an uncomfortable light on getting out with a mic in your hand. As long as you don't sing about getting out in a body bag, which didn't help the anger-retaliatory backlash against young unarmed black men starting in the 00s. I'm not pointing the finger at Ice Cube, nor Ice T, but they are. They were at the end of the 90s, when the "Stop and Frisk" policy of Illegal Search and Seizure (Not to mention the 2nd amendment) came under scrutiny. In fact, it was those artists, and others like them (I'm gonna say Murs) that pointed out that these "Rights" are privileges they don't have. If you outlaw guns for protection, only outlaws will have guns.
