In the old testmenat, Demons (Shed-im) is other gods (whose existence isn't aceepted) or gohst. Not really aything evil. Though in the later Talmud (which the first Chritians Jews did not follow), they are mentioned as horrible beings. But I think it's much easier than that: This was a way to make all the gods and their alike into something unexpected. So what better way is to do so than claiming they were evil to begin with?
