  2. Intel can't get workers in Ohio because no one interested in that kind of work wants to live where they are building the factories. They aren't anywhere near the major population centers of Columbus, Cincinnati or Cleveland. LMC had the same problem recruiting workers to move to the Lordstown area.

  3. Soviet and other communist regime failures were directly caused by competing against capitalist countries on capitalist terms. PRC is currently "finding out" in the financial sector. All of the above were and are better off focusing on social development and quality of life for the worker.

  5. Nothing to do with tankies. The Soviets had great engineers, just like Iran does today. The problem with both countries is politics, and I don't mean their political systems, I mean the actual people running the countries. A forward thinking leadership would be focused on more than just retaining power.

  6. All those other pursuits were far more important  @AlexKarasev . If space exploration was a prestige project, then they should have chosen a single target for a decisive "win." The whole thing is an example of what happens when you politicize engineering. The current folly of re-usability and controlled landing of launch vehicles is another example, in those cases with partially governmental and partially corporate politics driving them.

  12.  @mylet2658  but it's outside the city. Intel missed the point of the recent trends in urbanism and built in a suburb no one wants to even travel to. Furthermore, Ohio sucks for many reasons, the lack of public transit being chief among them. Columbus is known for keeping the streets clear n winter, but it's still a 40 minute bus ride to the nearest Intel facility from Columbus proper. What they need to do is build office buildings downtown like olden times, and also build walkable neighborhoods around them. Columbus isn't doing that, instead they simply reversed the commute from downtown to the suburbs during rush hour. It's the same thing every other dying city is attempting to do in order to bring back their tax base. Especially since they gave away all their tax revenue from businesses so that revenue from individuals is all that's left. It worked sooo well in Detroit... The only advantage Columbus has is that they're building just enough housing IN the city to boost the population numbers, but Cleveland still has a higher GDP. Go figure.

  13. ok what if the Soviets had said "F the moon, we're going to Mars" and put ALL their effort into that  @AlexKarasev ? They knew that Venus wasn't able to host people almost right away, and they were falling behind on the moonshot pretty quickly with N1. That's the kind of focus I'm talking about, not necessarily the SAME goal as the US. You can't lose if you're able to define your own conditions for victory.
