@Diminishedattentionspan If you think about it, the auto industry was doomed by the postwar baby boom. All forecasting for future growth was based on that golden era of Marshall Plan reconstruction economics. It was unsustainable, and no one wanted to face up to that reality. The decline to follow was just normal market correction due to saturation.

@LondonSteveLee this is the case with most patrol vehicles by every company that ever offered them. An "interceptor" isn't necessarily a higher horsepower option package, except when they are explicitly so. The average patrol vehicle is not.

@StavTech AFAIK there haven't been any special pursuit models with higher powered drivetrains since the 70s. Most are just suspension and brake upgrades, the rest are combinations of options available to the regular consumer. Even the last Caprice sold in the US was just a rebadged Holden, no superchargers or anything extreme it was cobbled together from off the shelf parts.

Okay now I want to know how Lambo stole the HMMWV design but still ended up partnering with Chrysler later on, since Chrysler developed the Abrams and almost got the HMMWV included with its purchase of AMC. I'd think Chrysler would find them sus AF as a business partner. And the only reason they couldn't get the HMMWV was because of their relationship with Renault at the time. AM General had to be spun off before regulators would approve the AMC purchase.

You made a dig at the Panamera, and I agree about the first iteration of it. I think the facelift Panamera actually looks pretty good. Porsche held onto their 90s design cues for too long, and they seemed to begin way back with the 928. It really showed with their SUVs and the Panamera, they looked dated from day one. They're only now catching up to modern times, while still looking distinctive.

this story is making me think about the police mechanic in Mad Max

I'd go with the Saab. I always liked the styling, and it's probably the most reliable of the three.

Hilarious seeing the warning lights on the Lancia dash in the outro

Only two door handles? POS.

to this day it's still my favorite AFX slot car body

Lotus Esprits are still a good value where you can find them, probably since they were technically a "mass produced" car just like the E type and XJS Jags were. If you have the money for something with supercar styling and reasonable reliability, find yourself a late production V8 model.

I have the AFX slot car in the same livery as the car in the video
