I still believe the UA gov narrative about needing weapons rather than conscripts. The technical abilities of the West's collective strategic arsenal is mind blowing. If sanctions against Russia had been complete and total from day one, they would not be able to recover from strikes against their war materiel facilities in Yekaterinburg and elsewhere in their interior. That UA hasn't completely destroyed their fossil fuel infrastructure is also a lack of Western will power to quit Russian gas cold turkey. Less exploitive terms with North African gas producer nations might have resulted in closer ties through strong trade relations, which would have been a bulwark against China and Russia's forays into the continent. The West isn't pouring the same amount of resources into a friendly Libyan regime, for example, when they absolutely should be.

If Hitler had just chilled out within his own borders the Third Reich would still be around, too, and probably would have founded something similar to the EU as a trade bloc for European ethnostates and an ally to the US and UK. China's prosperity would probably disappear overnight in a state of war, since no one in their society has every experienced any. And they share their continent with a whole lot of people who don't like them very much, while half of all Canadians and Mexicans are already either in the US or doing business here and are not likely to attack. Imagine China distracted with a major war when India decides they want their mountains back... and maybe a little bit more.

There is a universe of fission involving a few different reactor types that when used in a chain can result in a reduced need for extraction and very little high level waste. Breeder reactors can create fissile material while mixed oxide reactors can burn different fuels. Sadly, Rosatom was the leader in the latter technology. They could have been at the forefront of the disarmament movement.

It's more likely there are redlines that might seem reasonable to people on one side but not the other, while complete outsiders might be scratching their heads over them. Given the amount of time this has gone unresolved, I'm leaning toward the latter. Smarter people than us have failed for decades, I can't help but think they've been deliberately sandbagged by the people holding all the aces. Government is more than just administrative work, just as the private sector is more than just burger flippers. A roughly 15% public employment percentage that costs roughly 13% of GDP isn't good from a value standpoint, but the only possible change within the government's purview would be to cut salaries in half to match the private sector average. Is that what you'd like to see? Would cutting salaries AND increasing public employment be better? The employment participation rate is only around 50%, so maybe yes?

@eonby5941 I've met Palestinian-Americans. They are treated like Palestinians when trying to visit their homeland. No religious group should have purview over civil marriages, period. Arab Knesset members can easily be sanctioned for speaking too loudly on behalf of Palestinians, whose land Israel effectively controls. With an already small minority of seats, the other Knesset members can vote to suspend them at will and without cause. The reason that Netanyahu wanted to "reform" the judiciary is because it defended the rights of Arabs to exist as legitimate political opposition.

In practical terms, Hamas was Gaza's ONLY choice. And they haven't been given the opportunity to change their minds. The West decides which regimes it considers legitimate, and ignores those that they don't (ask the Cubans and Venezuelans about that.) By the same token, what is essentially a provisional government is easily dismissed by the occupier in every case except this one for some reason. And that reason is that Israel as a whole is acting out a passive-aggressive ethnic cleansing campaign. There are NO excuses for the illegal settlements if the Israeli government IN FACT wants to honor the previous two state roadmaps. No matter how much I want to believe that good people are looking out for both sides from within Israel, the state's actions on every level that matters point in the opposite direction.

I do however agree with part of your statistical approach, but since we can't post links here to back anything up, it sounded like you were just skimming the surface. GDP per capita doesn't account for differences in cost of living between states, PPP does it a little better and should always be considered. Income inequality is relevant though, especially since we are discussing what we consider to be a modern state with typical first world conditions in its major cities, i.e. the relative size of the slums matters, too.

@OddysChannel most of the people in SE Ukraine spoke both languages to some degree, at least before the invasion. Several million people have left the area, and the vast majority fled to the West, not Russia. I have no problem with a country having an official language, in fact I think the US should have one too. It does immigrants no good to not be able to communicate in the same language as everyone else, and those who actually become naturalized citizens of the US are required to learn English to some degree.

@fabiofaria4243 you make a good point about projection of power, but it's still a baby step, even in relation to the Russian navy (which, despite a dearth of modern surface ships, still maintains a formidable boomer fleet. ) I don't know that four boats will make much of a dent in the worldwide balance of power, but good on Brazil for taking that step. China has the ultimate reserve army of labor, and they're building nuclear powered boomers too; so I doubt that Brazil will end up in the top five naval powers, but the top ten is absolutely attainable. Now, what about their economy? Could they survive being sanctioned like other great powers can? There are limits to that too, and Russia is finding out. Brazil would have to dig even deeper into the Amazon for resources, exacerbating the climate issues created in the global North. That's their real long term problem: will they burn down their own back yard to become a southern hemisphere hegemon? Is it even worthwhile to do that? They''ll end up head to head with India before they even come close to catching China. Aren't they all supposed to be on the same side?

The bottom line is that most embassies are in Tel Aviv to please everyone else, while Israeli law declared Jerusalem as its true legal capital in 1980. I think most of us have been looking at your statement wrong. The state (at all levels of government) IS the largest single employer, but not compared to all other employers in aggregate. About 15% of the population works in the public sector, and the sixth largest single employer in Brazil is the Banco do Brasil, which is government controlled. Does that make more sense to everyone?
