  1.  @timesthree5757  the distinction between hypothesis and theory is clear, and that distinction relies on scientific consensus. For example, critics of Evolution still call it pseudo-science, but the voices of scientific illiterates don't affect its standing. In Galileo's day, that would have been the Church. Einstein arrived a century and a half after the Enlightenment, so he suffered less hysterics and enjoyed more rigorous scrutiny.

  2. @ the lungs are the last major organ to develop, and babies instinctively holding their breath underwater might have to do with them being more recently inside the womb. As we get older, that instinct fades, even if we keep on swimming regularly. We have to remember to do it more consciously as we age.

  3.  @Afrologist  to clarify with both of you (who have come to completely different conclusions about what I wrote), by consensus I mean that someone else has done experiments that prove or disprove your hypothesis, or at least have done the theoretical work/underlying math or chemistry to see if the concept is reasonably sound to begin with. Popular hypotheses enjoy the latter even when there may be no way to prove or disprove them through experiments. They remain hypotheses, even when most agree they are plausible.
