The production of the first movie involved making molds of Arnold's face, which were used to create the latex appliances that he wore for scenes that showed damage to the T-800's face. Those molds still existed when production of Salvation began, and they were used to create 3-D computer models of his 1984 face for CGI purposes. A body double (whose physique closely resembled Arnold's body in 1984) was used to film the scenes, and his face was replaced with Arnold's CGI face in postproduction. It was a pretty clever way of making the 1984 version of Arnold appear in the movie without the actual Arnold having to be involved at all. (They still had to pay him for the use of his image, of course.)

I think it's all about expectations. I went to see this film and came out of the theater very disappointed, particularly with the cliffhanger ending. I was so unhappy with it that I never bothered to go see the third film at all, and I wrote off the whole trilogy as a failure. Years later, I was curious about how the story ended, and I decided to rewatch the entire trilogy from the beginning. I was stunned at how much I enjoyed it. Why on earth had I disliked Reloaded so much? I couldn't even remember, but I think it was because I expected it to be more like the first film. When I actually rewatched it without expectations, and simply judged it on its own merits, I thought it was awesome. The whole trilogy is.

@Puschit1 Four Star Trek movies, The Abyss, The Last Starfighter, Battle Beyond the Stars, Dune, Flight of the Navigator, Young Sherlock Holmes, Flash Gordon, They Live, Predator, Wargames, Alien Nation, Enemy Mine, The Thing, Escape from New York, Spaceballs, Willow . . . the 1980s were a freaking Golden Age of science fiction and fantasy.
