  1. The "Big U"?, as the SS UNITED STATES 🇺🇸 was nicknamed, was primarily built as a troop carrier for the Pentagon, in case World War III broke out between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. As such, the ship was fireproofed with an ungodly amount of asbestos and non flammable interior fittings. Her interior was mid-century modern design turned up to eleven. Just stunning and so unique. Its rumored she could outrun the Soviet submarines of her day. A true racehorse across the Atlantic. So, World War III didn't happen and her purpose as a troop carrier faded away and Pan Am as well as BOAC killed her as an ocean liner. Stripped of her interior and sent to Turkey 🇹🇷 to be cleaned up from all of the carcinogenic materials... she was left to rot in the port of Philadelphia for decades, just a hulk without her interiors. Sal, as a Philadelphian who loved to go to the IKEA store restaurant and just gaze at the United States across Delaware Avenue through the floor to ceiling glass windows at her while eating Swedish meatballs... I'm heartbroken 💔 too. It's a crushingly sad ending for America's flagship. 😢
