Erik Hildinger Basically Erik said, every couple of hundred years some tribe (or collection of tribes) would come out from the Steppes start an empire, but could never really hold it. Then Along came Gunpowder, and that ended it.

There are (if memory serves) 4 different schools of thought on this, they all have scripture to back them up, an are mutually exclusive.
