If only Mitch McConnel had the guts to convict Trump for January 6th, there is precedent to impeach and convict someone after they left office (obvious not a President, but other positions in government can be subject to Impeachment (Cabinet posts, Federal Judges (including the SCOTUS), certain other appointees). Then after the conviction the “penalty” (a separate vote) can include barring that individual from ever holding public office again.
