  1. Why? Because Russia is always paranoid of attacks from the west… there’s no natural defense (mountains, large bodies of water) between the Carpathian Mountains in Romania and the Urals. Western Russia is mostly flat. Of course both Napoleon and Hitler will tell you that invading Russia was an insane move since Russia gets bigger and bigger north to south the farther east you go… and winter is just frozen hell.
