Easy: just say, “Look Russia, European security, Ukrainian security and Russian security are all important, NATO is a defensive alliance, we’re not looking to threaten anyone, but Ukraine is a sovereign country and they are allowed to ask to join the EU and NATO. Russia cannot dictate who can and cannot join these organizations, unless Russia wants to join too.”
