Below two streets (depends on which side of Central Park you are on) in Manhattan the ConEdison Steam System both heats AND cools thousands of buildings and it all originates from the 14th St power station in Alphabet City. It’s a “waste” byproduct from the gas fired steam turbines, they pressurize the steam (which cooks it at over 1000F (538C)) and send it out in a network of severely aging steam pipes. That classic “New York street” in movies and TV with the big orange and white striped pipe venting steam? That’s a real thing, it’s a temporary solution to stop hot steam from burning people and cars until a full repair is made. (Trust me, you do not want to get burned by this pressurized steam, it will burn down to bone.)
