I don’t think the name is bad, it pumps heat from one place to another, just depends on the fan direction. I think geothermal home heating and cooling should also be a subsidized option.

@Chad.Commenter most older furnaces are inefficient, more modern units are much better at using less fuel and stop putting out a good amount of heat. But you’re still burning hydrocarbons which is not so great for our planet. Of course if your electric heat pump is going power from a gas, oil or coal plant that’s just shifting the pollution away from your house to the power plant. Best example is where I live in NYC. We had a nuclear plant upstate, Indian Point ,but it was old and possibly near a fault line, so it was shut down a few years ago. Now most power generated is from natural gas, though we’re building long underground transmission lines all the way up to Quebec, which uses hydropower. I don’t believe we’d ever be able to only use Quebec power though. There’s talk of building offshore wind farms out in the Atlantic, but I don’t know when it if they’d build it.
