Wow, reading more into this, Reverend Jim Jones (yes, the Jonestown Massacre guy) tried to save the building, and even got 2000 of his supporters to help surround the building at an earlier eviction attempt. The city Sheriff knew Jones, and actually refused to follow the eviction order! (The Sheriff wound up being held in contempt of court for it). The new I-Hotel is in the same exact spot, the land was bought by the Catholic Archdiocese.
