  1. Many streetcar companies produced their own electric power and sold the surplus to their local area to supplement income. That all stopped with the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935, a Federal Law that prevented an electricity provider from doing anything other than producing and selling electric power. The streetcar companies were boxed out of their supplemental income source overnight. (Not related to the GM conspiracy, it was FDR’s idea.)
