Johnny Cash covering Hurt first made Trent Reznor mad, because that song was very personal, but after hearing Cash’s version, Trent said, “It’s not my song anymore, it’s his.” Everybody Hurts was the first new song I heard on the radio right after my crush broke my heart (she actually was a really toxic person, I just did not recognize it at the time). The Living Years was a song I rediscovered right after I became an adoptive father, and I’m doing my best to remember the message.
