From the works of Tolkien: the Wizards were supposed to use their powers to help Middle Earth fight Sauron, BUT they were never to use their powers to equal him, or become more powerful than him (the Wizards were Maia, like Sauron.) Think of them as archangels while Sauron is Lucifer. Saruman broke that rule, and paid for it with his life.
