Ace Combat 4 got dark quickly, the game’s framing story follows a young boy who sees a dogfight near his family home. The losing plane crashes into the house, killing everyone in his family. He then finds the other pilot and his squadron and follows them around hoping to have an opportunity for revenge, but things get complicated. It’s a beautiful game that shows just how horrible war is, for everyone. Gameplay wise, you start off in an occupied country and slowly but surely liberate it, but the early missions are pretty much desperate times/measures. Oh, and (spoilers) the end of the game reveals the boy has been writing a letter to the player character.
