While 1970 and Sabbath are usually pointed to as “the birth of metal”, go back 2 years and over to San Francisco to find the band Blue Cheer… tuned down, fuzz… their cover of “Summertime Blues” is definitely “metal” before it existed. They were also known for playing so loud, the crowd had to move back from the stage… standing too close was literally PAINFUL… to record the band they had to just play outside because the studio gear was overloading.
