  1. The Veto should be a joint veto, if you can get 2 other members (out of all 15, not just the big 5) to side with you, you can veto something.

  2. The UN Security Council is supposed to stop things like this… but the 5 members with veto power (as built into the charter) included the USSR, which the UN recognizes now as the Russian seat. Being able to veto anything, even things involving Russia (because there’s no rule about conflict of interest) means Russia has effectively handcuffed the UN Security Council. Many other nations tried to amend the Charter to remove the 5 vetos and expand the number of seats available on the Security Council… it went nowhere. There is a mechanism to remove a UN member state that constantly violates the charter, as Russia has been doing. The General Assembly can vote them out… but then the security council has to vote on it too… and I’m guessing Russia will still be allowed to veto that! 🤦‍♂️
